Cantilan Celebrates Town Fiesta

Cantilan’s grandeur and beauty was once again displayed when it successfully celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of our Lady to Heaven on August 15. This year’s celebration focused on the theme, “One People, One Destiny, One Strong Community” with series of activities done that made the occasion fruitful and meaningful.
On the 13th day of August was the grand opening parade around the town. It was participated by the LGU officials, faculty and staff of the different institutions, personnel from the different offices, the float bearing Miss Cantilan and her runners-up followed by their supporters and the general public. After the parade, Honorable Philip A. Pichay, Municipal Mayor, formally opened the program by a welcome message expressing his gratitude to the Cantilangnons for showing their cooperation and commitment to the cause of the celebration. The formal opening of the Cantilan Town Fiesta 2016 celebration was also done in that program by Sangguniang Bayan Member Marlyn R. Plaza, Director General of the affair. In the evening of that same day at 7:00 o’clock, the people were gathered at the Cantilan gymnasium to witness the Coronation of Miss Cantilan 2016. Varied presentations were given by selected students from different schools. Then, the reigning beauties were joined by the officers and members of the sponsoring organizations when they marched around the hall to the stage for the coronation rites. The beauties were: Miss Cyril Ann Quintos Iriberri, Miss Cantilan 2016, representing Cantilan Woman’s Club and United Bardugs International Association of Cantilan, Inc.; Miss Jemimah Mae Cruz Sering, first runner-up, representing the different public and private schools in Cantilan; and Miss Innah Jean Estrada Bullo, second runner-up, representing the Cantilan Sporting Club and CAMPUMARVENA.
On August 14, Sirong Street Dance Competition started at 7:00 o’clock in the morning. Smiles were shown on the faces of the participants while they danced around the streets of Cantilan. At 1:00 o’clock in the afternoon, the colorful Sirong final showdown took place. It was held at the ground of Surigao del Sur State University (SDSSU) - Cantilan Campus. The SDSSU dancers represented Cantilan in the competition and was proclaimed winner. In the evening of that day, in front of the town plaza, people were entertained by a street party with celebrity guests, Imelda Papin and Tuesday Vargas. This was followed by the fireworks display at 10:30 o’clock in the evening which added color to the celebration.
During the feast day on August 15, the traditional Diana around the town happened at 4:00 o’clock in the morning. The people were all awakened and some joyfully prepared for the 5:30 o’clock morning mass. Then, a procession of the Blessed Mother around the town followed. The Concelebrated Mass took place at 9:00 o’clock in the morning with Most Rev. Nereo P. Odchimar, DD, JCD, MBA, Bishop of the Diocese of Tandag as celebrant. Priests from the neighboring towns and some Cantilangnon Priests came to join in the celebration of Thanksgiving.
Varied entertainments took place the whole day that included basketball championship game between the Lanuza Team and Cantilan Team, as well as the Cantilan Showtime grand finals. Disco sa Bayan followed at 7:00 o’clock in the evening in front of Cantilan Sports Complex.
Indeed, Cantilan is taking the challenges of the time. It continuously strives to move forward to progress and development.
